Underoath - Lost In The Sound of Separation

Been waiting forever for this.

The heaviest Underoath album yet.

There is a transcoded 320 kbps copy with poor ID tags circulating the net right now. If you didn't it while it was up here, check elsewhere on the net. Its out there.

The Human Abstract - Midhaven

Just leaked. Listening now.

Not quite as exciting as Nocturne upon first impression, but still intelligent and skillful progressive metal.

All Shall Perish - Awaken The Dreamers

Guitar solos, sweeps, precision picking, and double kick rolls.

HOLY SHIT!

Australian Death Machine - Total Brutal

The hilarious side project of Tim Lambesis (vocalist of As I Lay Dying), inspired by Arnold Schwarzenegger.

You won't find fantasy lyrics or overly poetic love lyrics. There are only forcefully chanted, testosterone-driven phrases that governor Arnold would approve of.

Bottom line, Austrian Death Machine is fast, pissed, brutal metal...

and every song has a guitar solo :D

Norman Bates - Plaguebearer

The band name caught my eye, because Norman Bates is the main character in Robert Bloch's novel, Psycho, a sick and twisted story based on the real life serial killer Ed Gein. So I downloaded this one on a whim, and I wasn't disappointed, but I wasn't surprised either. The band lives up to their name. This is heavy. Their screamers are very talented, and the song structures are varied enough to keep me interested.

For Today - Ekklesia

From the heart of the Midwest rises a beast whose ferocity and aggression is rivaled only by its poise and focus. For the two years For Today have clawed and scraped their way into the spotlight. Seldom is there to be found a band whose passion and integrity are matched by their technicality and musical merit.

Basically all you need to know is that this drummer can double kick with the best of them, and the guitarists can both sweep well. Oh yeah, and many of the breakdowns feature a lot of dirty china and splash cymbal hits. Righteous.

The Ghost Inside - Fury And The Fallen Ones (2008)

Street date is April 15th, 2008. I don't know much about this band, other than they rock. Oh yeah, and they're touring with Veil of Maya, Winds of Plague, Stick To Your Guns, and As Blood Runs Black this summer. Holy Fuck.

Veil Of Maya - The Common Man's Collapse

‘Veil of Maya’ is a common Hindu term. Maya is said to represent the illusion that is our everyday consciousness. This blinds us from everything’s true forms and intentions, hence the veil of maya. It’s like how the Earth turned out to be a big computer in ‘The Matrix’. Neo’s veil was lifted and he saw the truth.
Formed in Chicago, IL in 2004, Veil of Maya are part of the small group of newer American metal bands that aren’t following the typical “metalcore” pattern, instead churning out a sound that’s as technically proficient as it is brutal. And no, despite their name and many a foolish accusation, Veil of Maya is not a Cynic tribute band.

Upon first listen, this album blew me away.

Compelling. Dynamic. Brutal.

For fans of Winds of Plague, As Blood Runs Black, Between The Buried and Me, Orgone, Cynic, Meshuggah, etc. They are on tour right now, with some awesome bands. Check their myspace to see if they are playing in a town near you.

For The Fallen Dreams - Changes

Review by Nicole Miele

In today's hardcore/metal scene, it's easy for anyone to become jaded by the constant clones of, what is basically, the same band with hundreds of different names. We've all heard it; the same riff accompanied by the growling vocals and simultaneous "chug-chug" breakdowns. So, we wait and maybe search the music section on Myspace for a breath of fresh air. Thankfully, hidden in the obscure depths of the internet are bands that give this genre hope, and if you look hard enough, you can find them.

One of these noteworthy bands is Saginaw, Michigan's well kept secret, For the Fallen Dreams. Formed in late 2003 and recently signing with Rise Records (The Devil Wears Prada, Drop Dead Gorgeous) in the summer of 2007, these young men show incredible promise through songs that showcase poignant and powerful writing, both lyrically and musically while still staying in touch with their hardcore/metal roots. Their music displays a well-done balance of metal and melody. Guitarists, Jim Hocking and Marcus Morgan show a variety of ranges while shifting back and forth between hard-hitting metal riffs and some rather melodic guitar lines. Given their ability to draw the listener in with brutally honest lyrics about life, relationships, and struggle, the band shows solidarity for their future as a band to be taken seriously.

Orgone - Goliath

Far too many technical bands are doomed before their music has a chance to be heard by inaudible and muffled recordings. It's a shame.

Orgone is one band that does not fall victim to the tragedy of terrible recording. Not one note goes unheard on Goliath. In fact, the miking technique used on the drums produces some of the clearest cymbal and snare sounds that I have heard on a recording in quite some time.

Goliath is a monster of an album (sorry, I couldn't resist). The whole album is structured like one long song, with smooth transitions that follow a musical progression. It contains only six tracks, but with the average song length above five minutes, when you do the math, you get more than 30 minutes of crazy-technical progressive metal. You can also hear a variety of other influences, from thrash to sludge to jazz. For fans of Between the Buried and Me.

Mychildren Mybride - Unbreakable

You said we’ll meet where dreams are made. So I’ll climb in my battered ship and voyage to the ends of the earth. Closing my eyes and setting sail on the dark waves. We’ll suck this dream world dry of every ounce of love that it’s worth.
Mychildren Mybride is a Christian hardcore/metalcore band from Alabama. They have a very tight sound, with very impressive drumming (and the drums sound massive). The song Headshot! is about the video game Halo, which the band plays a lot on tour.

Ion Dissonance - Minus The Herd

Today's word of the day, from the Page-A-Day calendar sitting on my desk, is dissonant.

dissonant: adj 1: marked by dissonance : discordant 2: incongruous 3: harmonically unresolved

Ion Dissonance is deathcore/mathcore/technical metal from Montreal. They have often been compared to The Dillinger Escape Plan, Beecher and Meshuggah. They are known for their technical riffs which are played one over another, groove-like drum patterns and a heavy atmosphere. Their lyrics are quite disturbing, dealing with death, murder, more death, and somewhat more acceptable topics such as struggling with faith. Lyrically, I don't stand behind this band's decisions, but hot dang can they riff. Stand-out tracks include The Surge and Shunned Redeemer.

All That Remains - The Fall of Ideals

All That Remains gained a lot of popularity when their song Six was featured in Guitar Hero 2. Sure, Six is a great song but The Fall of Ideals has so much more to offer. Track 1 (This Calling) starts out with a focused scream, and insane drumming. From there, the rhythm guitar work carries you to the chorus with triplets abound. The track's memorable chorus features one of the best double kick rolls I've heard, and intermittent vocal harmonies. The second half features a nice breakdown with crisp, clean pinch harmonics, and then a short guitar solo. But this is just the first track! The rest of the album features a variety of sounds, from death growls to high-pitched screams, and everything in between, including a little grindcore influence. But they never stray too far from the metalcore sound that holds the album together nicely. Try it out.
