Heiruspecs - A Tiger Dancing
More St. Paul rap from Heiruspecs.
Well into the second generation of hip-hop, Heiruspecs are aware of the tradition from which they have grown--the track "Dollar" even name checks some of their influences. However, an awareness of history has also allowed them to push and pull against any limitations that tend to shadow the commercial ascension of any new musical genre. Favoring bands like De La Soul, the recurring electric piano parts tie part of their sonic identity more into seventies and eighties sitcom theme songs than to the slash and wallop of rap. (Try listening to "5ves" without picturing the opening credits of "Taxi.") Heiruspecs have seamlessly incorporated elements of soul, pop and jazz, sculpting a nicely diversified album experience.

Heiruspecs - Small Steps
Heiruspecs (pronounced high-roo-spex) is a live rap/hip hop band based in Saint Paul, Minnesota, specifically the Midway neighborhood. The band's name is based on a deliberate misspelling of haruspex.
Heiruspecs formed in 1997 when the members were attending St. Paul Central High School. In 2004, Heiruspecs was named the best live artist in the Twin Cities by City Pages.
My favorite thing about this band? The bass player goes by "Twinkie Jiggles".

Atmosphere - When Life Gives You Lemons, You Paint That Shit Gold
This is the pride and joy of the Minneapolis hip hop scene.
When Life Gives You Lemons, You Paint That Shit Gold is the sixth full-length studio album by Minneapolis hip hop duo Atmosphere. It was released on Slug's own Rhymesayers Entertainment label on April 22, 2008 to considerable critical acclaim. Because of concerns over piracy, Rhymesayers decided not to send advance copies to critics; instead, the label invited critics to listening parties.
Well, the album inevitably leaked, but I restrained every desire within me to post it on this blog, because neither Adam nor I wanted to detract from the album sales. Its been out for a few weeks, and I'm posting it now in the hopes that you guys will listen, love, and buy this album.
When Life Gives You Lemons, You Paint That Shit Gold debuted at number 5 on the U.S. Billboard 200, selling about 36,000 copies in its first week. It is Atmosphere's first album to reach the top ten of the Billboard 200 and the highest charting release from the independent label Rhymesayers.

Sage Francis - A Healthy Distrust
somehow in all the sage francis posts this album was left out. how? this is probably his strongest release. killer tracks from danger mouse and reanimator and the lyrical genius of sage are found throughout. 'slow down ghandi' is a great political angst track in the vein of well, hip hop, before it went commercial.

Sage Francis - Personal Journals
for fans of P.O.S. and DoomtreeDamn. Sometimes you hear something that so deeply enriches your world, you just have to listen to it in small doses. You want to savor it, make it last, so you dole it out to yourself. Sick flow, immense emotion.
Sage Francis is an accomplished spoken word poet and MC with several competitive titles to his name within both genres. He also performs with a live band, Art Official Intelligence, and together with Joe Beats and DJ Perseus, forms the Non-Prophets. He is equal parts serious and silly, but never fails to impress.
Standout track: #1, Crack Pipes. It gives me shivers every time.

Bisc1 - When Electric Night Falls

Lyrically this album is nothing SPECIAL but it's certainly not cringe worthy, Biscs flow is very nice giving these smooth street beats all the justice they deserve. This does sound like an album which could potentially leave a very large impression providing it gets the correct exposuer & whilst it defiantly will appeal to the underground crowd the is enough here to appease the mainstream, people who simply DON'T like hip hop like at all should probably give this one a skip since, as I said, this is a straight up hip hop record.

Atmosphere - Sad Clown Bad Spring 12
For those of you not watching Atmosphere's "Paint it Gold" series on Rhymesayer Entertainment's youtube, this shit dropped today in an April Fool's Day joke.
"Paint it Gold" is Atmosphere's webisode series hyping their upcoming (April 22nd) album "When Life Gives You Lemons, You Paint That Shit Gold." You can watch the video and follow the link in there for the download, or hit up the one we're hosting. It's real fresh. Four tracks, just somethin to keep your palette wet until the real album drops. Look for a review once I get my pre-ordered copy.

Gorillaz - G-sides
G-sides is a compilation of the B-sides from Gorillaz' first (and self-titled) album. Originally only released in Japan in 2002, these tracks got about as much buzz as the album. I know it's kind of old news, but they are must-haves if you consider yourself a Gorillaz connoisseur. So here is that:

Also, Pitchfork took the liberty of composing what they consider to be the ultimate album by substituting some of the best G-sides in for the weaker of the tracks off the self-titled album. If you would prefer just to have that, here you be:

Gnarls Barkley - The Odd Couple
Here it is! The much anticipated sophomore album from Danger Mouse and Cee-Lo Green. Topping St. Elsewhere's fame with Crazy posed as a bit of a hurdle, but this team shouldn't be underestimated. The Odd Couple got rave reviews, so you should give it a listen. Check out the first single, Run, and also a couple of my favorites: Going On and Whatever.

edIT - Certified Air Raid Material
Crisp. Glitch. Crunk.
Certified Air Raid Material seems to be edIT's unsolicited application for hip hop producer. While his previous release, Crying Over Pros and Cons for No Reason, was more relaxed and calming, this newest release is a different story. Certified Air Raid Material is chock-full of dance floor anthems, with some of the most complicated drum chops and sample cuts you've ever heard. Once edIT finished the beats, he invited some of the world's top underground rappers to join the party. The result: perhaps the most futuristic-sounding "hip-hop" album in history. This album features tracks such as 'Battling Go-Go Yubari in Downtown L.A.' and 'Crunk De Gaulle' that will make your head bob and your booty bounce.
