Shai Hulud - Misanthropy Pure

picked this up two days after it was released... Shai Hulud are back, and they are as gold as ever. they play solid metalcore with hardcore punk/progressive bits running through their veins.

the album art is reminiscent of typical hair-rah-in-your-face metal bands (which i am not terribly keen on), but these guys actually make a damn good point with their fairly hateful music (check out the lyrics. poignant.) - and i love these guys. haha.

anyhoo, give this album a listen. they've been around for a while, they know what they're doing. :)

The Dillinger Escape Plan - Ire Works

ire works deserves to be heard by everyone. some picky dillinger fans have complained about their cleaner and more jazzed-up sound, but if anything, this album displays a progressive maturity of the band: from the noisecore vibes of calculating infinity, to the more experimental miss machine, to this. enjoy :)

The Human Abstract - Nocturne

The band's name references a poem of the same title by William Blake, an English poet from the 18th century. The Human Abstract is a technical/progressive/mathy metal band from California. Their 2006 album, Nocturne features many guitar sweeps and tapping sequences. These guys are talented. The rest of the band keeps up fairly well. The vocals leave me wanting more, but as I said, the guitars are great fun to listen to.

Orgone - Goliath

Far too many technical bands are doomed before their music has a chance to be heard by inaudible and muffled recordings. It's a shame.

Orgone is one band that does not fall victim to the tragedy of terrible recording. Not one note goes unheard on Goliath. In fact, the miking technique used on the drums produces some of the clearest cymbal and snare sounds that I have heard on a recording in quite some time.

Goliath is a monster of an album (sorry, I couldn't resist). The whole album is structured like one long song, with smooth transitions that follow a musical progression. It contains only six tracks, but with the average song length above five minutes, when you do the math, you get more than 30 minutes of crazy-technical progressive metal. You can also hear a variety of other influences, from thrash to sludge to jazz. For fans of Between the Buried and Me.
