Kid Dakota - A Winner's Shadow

Darren Jackson (Kid Dakota, The Hopefuls) recently built a studio in his home in Northeast Minneapolis and has had a steady flow of various artists in and out recording. It seems as if he's barely had time for his own projects. However, these comers-and-goers have possibly influenced him toward something new, and given him the opportunity to refine his skills in the studio.

Hear what local Minneapolis blog bolachas grĂ¡tis has to say about Kid Dakota's newest release "A Winner's Shadow":

Thus, "A Winner's Shadow" qualifies as the most DIY record Jackson has made, and it's definitely his most cohesive. From the whirling, march-paced opener "New York System" to the paranoid but gorgeous closing ballad "Fallout" -- who knew Jackson could do the Thom Yorke thing so well? -- the record is one big exercise in loud vs. soft rock 'n' roll. Its best cuts, including the steady-climbing "Chutes & Ladders" and the CD's climax, "Downhill," seem to have four or five levels of volume and intensity.

In an interview I went to Jackson also commented on a Hopefuls album coming out this year sometime. They have 30-something songs ready, so there is plenty to form an album.

The Dodos - Visiter

excerpt of review by Ian Cohen of Pitchfork.
On Visiter, Dodos guitarist Meric Long alternates between fingerpicking and breakneck strumming while playing in confounding alternate tunings. Logan Kroeber's clattering, locomotive percussion (which includes shoes outfitted with tambourines) is every bit a lead instrument as Long's guitar, and a big reason the band's music has garnered comparisons to the less abstract moments of Animal Collective and the output of other new-primitivist bands like High Places and Yeasayer.

The One AM Radio - A Name Writ in Water

The One AM Radio is the musical project of Hrishikesh Hirway, a composer and songwriter from Los Angeles. The sound is lush, soothing, almost ethereal vocals over dream-like instrumental arrangements. He does most of his own recording, playing several of the instruments and producing all the beats; the style borders electronica, folk, post-rock, chamber music, and ambient music. Live, he is joined by a changing line-up of accompanists.

Glen Hansard - Once Soundtrack

This is the soundtrack from the movie Once that came out in 2006ish. It was a Irish musical and the movie itself i would say is below quality, but the soundtrack is excellent. Done primarily by a man by the name of Glen Hansard, this soundtrack features a lot of great music that is primarily acoustic with a few full band pieces and one that is more on the comical side where the main instruments are toy keyboards (Falling from the Sky). Some of the highlight songs are "Falling Slowly" "If you want me" and "When your minds made up." This is one album that you should definitely listen to more than once because the more you hear it, the more it grows on you. Enjoy!
