Beck - Modern Guilt

Beck's new album Modern Guilt, produced with Brian "Danger Mouse" Burton, will be released July 8, 2008.

The new album contains 10 new songs, and with the exception of last year's Grammy-nominated, digital-only single "Timebomb", Modern Guilt is the first new material Beck has written since the prolific stretch that produced 2005's platinum Guero and 2006's universally acclaimed The Information.

Modern Guilt is a tightly assembled group of songs that range in lyrical tone from introspection and social commentary to off the cuff wordplay and lighthearted humor. Musically, the album's ten tracks vacillate between economy and experimentation, hybrid and pop classicism, while consistently manifesting Beck and Danger Mouse's shared interest in psych-rock, folk, electronic minimalism and orchestration.

Beck is about to embark on a tour of the UK and Europe, followed by a number of US headline and festival appearances, culminating in Beck's biggest hometown headline show to date, September 20, 2008 at the Hollywood Bowl.

Coldplay - Viva la Vida or Death and All His Friends

This is a RCD rip (or a good imitation of one), so you won't find any higher quality recording of this on the internet at least until the album comes out (June 17th in the US). This album "leaked" a few days ago, but one of the songs was .wma (so if you downloaded that version, trash it...this one is better).

I'm not a Coldplay fanatic, but if you are, check this out. (Brian Eno produced it)

Search The City - A Fire So Big The Heavens Can See It

(re-up'd)
As I'm sure many of you have noted, the majority of new music is complete garbage. Listening to the crap they play on the radio is just about enough to make me puke.

Good news: Search The City.
This band has restored my faith in radio-friendly alt rock music. They have a sound similar to Acceptance, Sing It Loud, Anberlin, and Secret & Whisper. Listen to track 1, Son Of A Gun, for some really fantastic song-writing.

Grand Ole Party - Humananimals

You know how usually opening bands are frequently mediocre?

Not Grand Ole Party. I first had the pleasure of hearing them when they opened for Rilo Kiley this past September (Blake Sennet produced this album actually) and they literally rock. Lead singer Kristen Gundred sounds a lot like Karen O from the Yeah Yeah Yeahs but their overall sound has a slightly more classic rock edge. Download this but try and see them live for the full effect!

Anberlin Discography

Anberlin's music features talented song writing and wonderful melodies. They are one of my favorite bands of all time. All their studio albums are very solid, and worth checking out. They have recently announced plans to release a new album. New Surrender is set to be released in August of 2008.

Fleming & John - Ugly Girl

Fleming and John are another musical husband/wife duo (like Mates of State) that met at college in Nashville and began making sweet sweet music together!

In the past they've opened for friend and fan Ben Folds, who called them the "Carpenters of the 1990s with Led Zeppelin's rhythm section," and they continue to perform and record with Folds from time to time.

This is track is from their album "The Way We Are" that was released in 1999 but it's still a good one to have in the music library!

Your Best Friend - Self-Titled

Your Best Friend are an extremely talented and extremely dedicated foursome from Saginaw, Michigan. They've been around, in one form or another, for four years. After member departures, member returns, more departures, and finally new members, Your Best Friend has a solid line up that cranks out heartfelt jam after heartfelt jam. The choruses are catchy, the melodies are on point, and the lyrics are meaningful, but this band is at their best when they are simply jamming.

Zwan - Mary Star Of The Sea

Billy Corgan and his side projects since the original demise of 'The Smashing Pumpkins' have often been dismissed & with good merit.... I mean his solo effort was positively average at best for example. As a result people tend to completely dismiss anything Billy has been involved with since the original Pumpkins run. However by doing this they also skip this gem of an album which sees Billy lead a super band which in truth sounds more of a 'band' then 'The Smashing Pumpkins' ever did (by that I mean it would seem Billy wasn't a dictator this time round).

This album is very much a pop rock one, it's allot less heavy then the pumpkins and allot more happy, think of Siamese Dreams sprinkled with sugar (in a non sickening way) and this is pretty much what you get. The sunshine pop here is almost essential for a summers day & is composed of some really nice melodies, memorable hooks and doesn't feel as cold and empty as anything else Billy did this millennium.

People who automatically dismiss this album should probably check it out, it's easily in the top 3 records Billy has ever put out (not the best of course) but it's refreshing to hear something so fun and joyful come from this otherwise cold figure of late.

+44 - When Your Heart Stops Beating +BONUS

When this album came out it was like Jesus' second coming.

Originally +44 was only going to be a side project to blink-182, when Mark Hoppus and Travis Barker noticed that Tom DeLonge was becoming less and less interested in blink. After blink-182 announced their "indefinate hiatus" in February 2005, former members, Mark Hoppus and Travis Barker wanted to continue working on music. The duo began to collaborate which resulted in writing and recording new songs together in Travis' basement. Originally, electronic drums, keyboards, and direct computer recordings were used in the majority of recordings. Barker later stated that the whole electronic element of the band was derived from "155", the first song he and Hoppus wrote as a band (the song title is simply the tempo of the recording).

As work continued on the demos, "Get the Girl" vocalist Carol Heller was invited by Hoppus and Barker to try out her vocals. Heller's performance was agreeable enough to the band and as a result the three kept working on more songs together. The band's lineup changed again early 2006, with the addition of guitarist Shane Gallagher. In order to progress with their demos, Barker and Hoppus acquired a studio, a move which marked a major turning point for +44. Travis Barker said in an interview that he recorded Chapter 13 (which happens to be track 12) in one take without hearing the lyrics or the whole song in its entirety. He wanted to re-record it after he heard the final recording of the song but the guys in the band wouldn't let him. They thought he nailed it (which is not uncommon of Travis...he's one of the best drummers out there, and his talent is undeniably evident on this album).

The band began working solely in the studio they had purchased, playing live drums, guitars and vocals. The band's sound had started with an electronic element which became less evident, but still remained a key feature. As a result, Heller found she wasn't compatible with the band's direction, and with the addition of her wish to start a family, she left the band. The vocal work that Heller contributed is still present in the songs "Make You Smile", "Weatherman", and the early mix of "No, It Isn't". After this, Hoppus, Barker, and Gallagher were left to find a new backing vocalist. Guitarist Craig Fairbaugh of "Mercy Killers" then joined the band.

As the projected release date grew nearer, it was believed that the album would be called "A Little Death Makes Life More Meaningful," which was later revealed to be a lyrics from the song "Little Death." Mark finally settled on "When Your Heart Stops Beating". The band played their first gig on the September 7, 2006 (my birthday!) in Hollywood, which was the first live show that Mark had played in two years. The album was released on November 14, 2006 in North America.

Note: On August 6, 2007, Mark announced on his blog, HiMyNameIsMark, that plans were underway for a new album (to be released on Interscope Records).
"We’ve got a bunch of ideas; a studio full of instruments, microphones, and effects; and a soundboard from the 1970’s."
-Hoppus
I could go on and on about this album, but I don't want to bore you. Let me just say this: eclectic. catchy. wonderful.

Thrice - The Alchemy Index: Vols. I&II: Fire & Water

In September 2006, Thrice announced plans for a new album on its official website (later titled The Alchemy Index). The album was conceived as a series of 4 EPs, each of which represents an element of nature: Earth, Air, Fire, and Water. The band maintained a studio blog titled Alchemy Index throughout the recording process.

The first half, The Alchemy Index Vols. I & II: Fire & Water, was released on October 16, 2007.

The Alchemy Index Vols. III & IV will be released on April 15, 2008. The band debuted "Come All You Weary" a month or so ago. A video of the performance can be found on here. According to the band, this song is the only song from The Alchemy Index Vol. IV that has a full drum kit or any instrument that isn't acoustic.

As Tall As Lions - As Tall As Lions

"sing into the moonlight,
who could ask for more?”

As Tall As Lions can soar like U2, groove like Days Away, get as technical as Gatsby’s American Dream, rock out like Brand New, experiment like The Mars Volta, and even emote like Damien Rice. Seamlessly streamlining these qualities, the band has turned out a surprisingly adult, grown-up, complete, hypnotic, entrancing, brave, and layered sophomore effort with lasting appeal to boot. I’m just about out of adjectives, but please don’t miss one of the best that 2006 has to offer. It requires more than a single listen to truly consume and digest the songwriting which at first might seem to blend, but all efforts will be handsomely rewarded, and soon each track becomes distinct. Even summer sometimes succumbs to rainfall, nighttime, and gloom, and this record soundtracks those darker times, when sunshine gives way to the moonlight and the fog.

Gorillaz - G-sides

G-sides is a compilation of the B-sides from Gorillaz' first (and self-titled) album. Originally only released in Japan in 2002, these tracks got about as much buzz as the album. I know it's kind of old news, but they are must-haves if you consider yourself a Gorillaz connoisseur. So here is that:

Also, Pitchfork took the liberty of composing what they consider to be the ultimate album by substituting some of the best G-sides in for the weaker of the tracks off the self-titled album. If you would prefer just to have that, here you be:

Heartstop - Moments (2008)

Heartstop is a five piece alternative rock band out of Los Angeles with soaring choruses and catchy, unforgetable lyrics that tell a story not just of growing up but the moments that happen in your life that help shape it. Their five-song EP entitled "Moments" was produced, recorded, and mixed by Travis Huff (New Found Glory, Yellowcard, Fall Out Boy).
