I'm sorry that it took me so long to post this! This cd is a favorite of mine. I first had the pleasure of seeing this ridiculously talented ensemble last September with Caroline Smith & Johanna Kunin. "Hardwood Pews" and "In Our Blood" are two of my favorites!

Johnny Foreigner - Waited Up Til It Was Light
Without a doubt one of the most heavily hyped bands of 2008, Johnny Foreigner follow a similar format to other success story 'Los Campesinos' with male/female call back vocals over sprawling guitars and lots of noise but less twee. Essentially the is a lot going on here but the album some how is more infectious and downright more impressive then 'Hold On Now Youngster' by Los Campesinos, the main reason for this is down to the production choices made... whilst not bare it's certainly a lot less polished and more lo-fi then Campesinonses effort... with a hyper active attitude, clever lyrics and tonnes of depth this is easily one of the best album releases of the year & is easily one of the best debuts I have heard for a long long long time.

Sunset Rubdown - Random Spirit Lover
I don't want to say a lot because the music kind of speaks for itself but Sunset Rubdown was originally started as the solo project of Wolf Parade's Spencer Krug. His baby is now all grown up and full of energy on "Random Spirit Lover". Check it out!

Subtle - exitingARM
Subtle are considered by many to be one of the finest musicians currently active in music today & with good reason, all of their albums have been stone cold genius.... so with this heavy weight placed firmly on their shoulder how do this experimental hip hop group fair? Well the answer is quite simple in this case & that is, rather well indeed..... NO!... I was wrong they don't fair rather well, they fair better then RATHER well, they have put out the album of their career so far & I will tell you why this is & it comes in the words of 'FOCUS'. Sure the group are just as eclectic as ever and I never felt the need to criticise the groups focus before but on this album it just all makes sense more so then ever, it's not jarred at all & where as in their previous albums they would swing one way rapidly to another in the space of 3mins this album seems to have all the same elements but used more coherently and sparingly & it works brilliantly.
The album is as usual heavy and dense and produced brilliantly, the dense nature of the album means the is something to discover each & every listen.... the melodies within are hooky and very on the up but on first listen this may not seem the case, notes and drones dance and inter lay within one another & it's not until you listen to this album repeatedly will you even begin to get the patterns and see the true beauty, its pretty at first but now on my 6th listen I find this album all the more captivating & generally surprising... it's a hard thing to get right & I honestly thought it would lack the depth of the earlier albums due to it's surprisingly approachable first listen.
I have heard 'Third' by Portishead, 'April' by Sun Kil Moon & 'Alopecia' by Why? but for me I think this album out does them all and so far is the best album of the year & I would be very suprised if anything beats it.

Eugene McGuinness - The Early Learnings Of Eugene McGuinness
Drowned In Sound just announced that Eugene McGuinness, the promising Liverpudlian singer/songwriter, is to open the DiS stage at Great Escape festival in Brighton & as I am going to this particular event it re-kindled my love for this, one of my favorite releases of last year. Eugene takes the stereotypical singer/songwriter formula and turns it on it's head with tongue in cheek lyrics, great roll of the tongue delivery and some sweet melodies which can both make one happy and energetic and one to pluck a heart string or two.
The mini album as it's put has absolutely no filler & is pretty much consistently great... the are allot of memorable moments here to make it one of my favourite albums of last year & I hope people check it out the below video is not to be taken as absolute judgement of this offering as allot of the tracks are much slower paced then this, though the are a couple more such as the brilliant 'High Score' and 'Child Lost In Tesco' which takes on a similar guise.
Beck - Odelay (Deluxe Reissue)
One of the most important albums of the 90s, Odelay was the long awaited follow up to 'Mellow Gold' & now almost 12 years since it's original release in 1996 the album has been re-issued with B-sides from the Odelay era & remixes of original tracks from Odelay present on a 2nd disc. Odelay is well renowned for it's integration of genres ranging from Rock, Hip Hop, Folk, Electronica and Noise to create something, though not totally innovative, different into the mainstream media.
The album still sounds as fresh as it did when it was released & the B-sides are really strong as well (as are the remixes) but at over 2hours in length it is nearly impossible to listen to the whole collection in one go but in the whole you do have 2 very strong discs & whilst it will offer nothing new to collectors the is enough here to warrant the re-issue.
Hot Chip - Sensual Seduction
They've done it again...& by that I mean made a kick-ass cover of a song. This time they channeled Snoop Dogg's latest "Sensual Seduction".
Obviously, nothing can top the original but it's still one for the collection.

Andrew Bird - Soldier On EP
Andrew Bird continues to progress wonderfully as a musical artist. His albums seem more and more like collections after each one is released due to all of the familiar elements. His 8-track EP "Soldier On" appears to be a collection of sorts. One demo, one remix and other pieces from the past few years are brought together in this rather lengthy EP. Some of the tracks come from various compilations, while some are new and offer fans a slight hint as to what's next. No need to worry, however, the whistling and violins are still ever-present!
I recommend the early version of "Heretics". That's my favorite song off of his last album "Armchair Apocrypha" and this version is really stripped down.

Klaxons - Myths Of The Near Future
This album was released a little over a year ago and I still find myself turning to it every time I need a pick-me-up or a spur-of-the-moment dance party with the roomies (cough, Emily). You should prooooobably download it.
I'm a little bit obsessed with every song but "It's Not Over Yet" is particularly great for a dramatic interpretive dance session. If you're not down with your inner dancer you could always just go for a jog whilst playing this album too, that's cool.

Liam Finn - I'll Be Lightning
New Zealand native Liam Finn sticks to a truly DIY creative-process. Besides playing the ultimate creative executive, Finn even shoots his own publicity photos and album artwork. Finn plays nearly every instrument on the album, and is also noted to have a great live show. Having all of this control gives Finn the complete liberty to produce experimental pop music that is at once direct and emotional, which is made evident on his standout debut album "I'll Be Lightning".
Lucky for us listeners it seems like he has more up his sleeve:
“I think the fact of doing this looping, one-man-band sort of thing really keeps you on your toes and keeps it fresh. The more you mess up, the more you’re forced to turn it into a good mess and people seem to respond more. I find it really stimulating. I just love the danger of it, really.”
Unfortunately for those of us in MN, we just missed him at the 400 bar on March 1st but if any of you have plans to head out east be sure to check his website for the nearest location and stayed tuned...it doesn't seem like he'll be going anywhere for awhile.

Death Cab for Cutie - I Will Possess Your Heart
Sqquueal! The loves of my life (Death Cab for Cutie) have officially released their new single "I Will Possess Your Heart" off their new album Narrow Stairs which will be released sometime in May (fingers crossed it's done in time for my birthday!)
