Emancipator - Soon It Will Be Cold Enough

Emancipator is a collection of beautiful mistakes
captured from the aural ether.
Emancipator escaped from the Underground Railroad Chain Gang in the 11th century. He invented the hot air balloon, with which he chartered the Amazon River. He invented wine.

Emancipator found the formula for the crystallization of ice during a quiet Japanese winter. He perfected the art of agriculture. He can climb trees faster than you.

Emancipator bleeds ambrosia. He discovered Iceland. He can breathe underwater.

Emancipator lives in a fortress made of moon rock. His presence attracts songbirds. He can recite all the digits of pi.

Emancipator can do a barrel roll by pressing Z or R once.
Incorporating violins, keys, various samples and the occasional voice sample, this Emancipator has put together a release more than worthy of the attention of record labels. The fact that this album was funded not by a record label, but by a college student who records in his spare time, is quite admirable. He has recently been signed to Hydeout Productions, which will be releasing Soon It Will Be Cold Enough on April 25th.

MGMT - Time To Pretend

edited: This is MGMT's demo release from 2005. Also check out Adam's post on MGMT's full length, Oracular Spectacular.

MGMT (formerly known as "the management") seems to pull from the oddest combination of genres. While at times MGMT has a playful 70's dance sound in songs like "Electric Feel", they move on to a much more classic rock, Rolling Stones-esque sound in songs like "Pieces of What." They can also throw something much more psychedelic in songs like "4th Dimensional Transition."

Kevin Drew - Spirit If...

Co-founder of Broken Social Scene's Kevin Drew released his solo album "Spirit If..." last summer and it is nothing short of fabulous. Featuring cameos from many of Broken Social Scene's current and former members like Feist, Stars, and Dinosaur Jr., the album is composed of ambiguous and suggestive lyrics. "Spirit If..." has an air of shabby romanticism that manages to maintain a feeling of exquisiteness at the same time. The vocals are blended at a level that allows for comprehension, even if the words themselves aren't always understood. Allow time for this album to sink in because it is only after many listens that it's true distinctiveness sets in.

Burden Of A Day - Blessed Be Our Ever After

Burden of a Day will stake their reputation on their ability to perform.

NOTE: one-handed cartwheels on stage:
Touring through the lower 48 states as well as Europe, they've exhibited an energy and a presence seldom matched. Hailing from Sarasota, Florida - a retired people's town with a music scene as cold and unforgiving as the winters most move there to escape - they've managed to accumulate a following that keeps even their smallest shows well populated.
This album receives mixta peep's official seal of approval.

Burden Of A Day - Pilots & Paper Planes

With their debut album Pilots & Paper Planes, Burden Of A Day burst out of Florida with a musical prowess full of catchy hooks and anthemic vocals that still packs an intensity not often felt from such young bands.

Pilots & Paper Planes was released in 2006; Blessed Be Our Ever After (2008) has been seeing many spins on my iPod lately.

City and Colour - Bring Me Your Love

City and Colour is an acoustic side-project fronted by Dallas Green, who is most famous for being a member of the band Alexisonfire. The name City and Colour stems partially from Dallas' humble nature, as he was uncomfortable releasing material under his full name, instead preferring a stage name. Dallas being a city, and Green a color, the name is very fitting indeed. This is the second release by Green, the follow up to Sometimes, which went Platinum in Canada and received the Juno Award for Alternative Album Of The Year (2007).

Shiny Toy Guns - We Are Pilots

Shiny Toy Guns is an indie rock band from Los Angeles, California that formed in 2002. They have since released their album We Are Pilots three different times, on three different record labels, each release containing a slightly different track listing. On December 6, 2007, We Are Pilots received a Grammy Award nomination in the category of Best Electronic/Dance Album, but lost to the Chemical Brothers. Nonetheless, We Are Pilots is a top notch album (we can only hope after three releases).

Many of the songs on the album have been used in tv/film scores (The Real World, One Tree Hill, America's Next Top Model, Dancing with the Stars, etc.), commercials (Honda, Motorola) and video games (Burnout, FIFA '07).

Underoath - Define The Great Line

Underoath

Very rarely does a monumental record find itself matched with the promise of commercial success. But the strength, intensity, and explosive lure of Underoath's follow up to its 2004 breakthrough "They're Only Chasing Safety" is undeniable.
Crafted with the help of producer Matt Goldman, and Killswitch Engage guitarist Adam Dutkiewicz, this album was destined for greatness from the very beginning. The 6 members of Underoath were all pushed to new heights in the recording studio. The veterans were challenged to use E-bows, orchestral bows, and experimental effects pedals. The resulting "Define The Great Line" is a mind-blowing song-cycle infused with spiritual power that resets the notion of what heavy music can be.

And if it's that spiritualness that sets Underoath's fierce, foot-stomping metallic drive (see Returning Empty Handed) apart from its peers, perhaps guitarist Tim McTague puts it best when he talks about the real rewards of being in one of the biggest genre-bending bands today.
"For me, the kids that we meet at shows who come up to us and tell us, 'I was going to kill myself and then I heard this song of yours that changed my life around spiritually.' Or even the one who said, 'I had no one to turn to when my parents divorced, but your record got me through it.' That's what it's all about for me."

Mychildren Mybride - Unbreakable

You said we’ll meet where dreams are made. So I’ll climb in my battered ship and voyage to the ends of the earth. Closing my eyes and setting sail on the dark waves. We’ll suck this dream world dry of every ounce of love that it’s worth.
Mychildren Mybride is a Christian hardcore/metalcore band from Alabama. They have a very tight sound, with very impressive drumming (and the drums sound massive). The song Headshot! is about the video game Halo, which the band plays a lot on tour.

The Mae Shi - HLLLYH

For these guys, its ALL about the music, and having fun. The way it should be.

The Mae Shi released their first album, Terrorbird, in 2004. In order to promote the release, the band embarked on a 31-day, 32-show tour, without using a booking agent. The band offered to play any birthday party, wedding, or bar mitzvah for $100.

Meat Beat Manifesto - Autoimmune

*many thanks to robin hood for his post on this album.
check out his blog.

Metropolis Records
Meat Beat Manifesto has been hailed as one of the front runners in the electronic music scene since 1987. Front man Jack Dangers has made sure over the years to keep from being categorized into a specific genre by continuously expanding his musical influences and overall direction of Meat Beat Manifesto. The first album, Storm The Studio, was immediately considered an industrial classic. Even with its success, Dangers refused to rest on his laurels and constantly evolved the Meat Beat sound with no two albums sounding exactly alike. Now after many years of silence, Meat Beat Manifesto is back! With this tenth album, Autoimmune, the seminal electronic band is pushing the musical boundaries even further than they’ve gone before. Focusing on the type of music he likes to create, mastermind Jack Dangers has created a tour de force of electronic genius which is sure to spark renewed interest in the dubstep and electronic music scenes.

Lightspeed Champion - Falling Off The Lavender Bridge

Devonte Hynes is the man.
I mean, seriously...check out the album art. His hair is so...sexual.

According to Hynes, the album is in two halves; a mixture of his dreams and life experiences. The lavender in the album title refers to a piece of lavender that he would hold as a child while sleeping, to which he attributes many wonderful dreams.

Various Artists - August Rush Soundtrack

Since im in the soundtrack realm i figure why not. Here is another one from another music movie August Rush. A better quality film if i do say so myself... even had me tearing up a bit, but anyways. This soundtrack has some various songs that revolve around guitar tapping. The songs are performed by Kaki King, and are really cool sounding. There are also some classical mixed with rock on the album, and even an acapella song that sounds great. Its good sounding album and if you particularly like the guitar tapping done by kaki king, i suggest you look into one of her solo albums as well. Cheers.

Glen Hansard - Once Soundtrack

This is the soundtrack from the movie Once that came out in 2006ish. It was a Irish musical and the movie itself i would say is below quality, but the soundtrack is excellent. Done primarily by a man by the name of Glen Hansard, this soundtrack features a lot of great music that is primarily acoustic with a few full band pieces and one that is more on the comical side where the main instruments are toy keyboards (Falling from the Sky). Some of the highlight songs are "Falling Slowly" "If you want me" and "When your minds made up." This is one album that you should definitely listen to more than once because the more you hear it, the more it grows on you. Enjoy!

Ion Dissonance - Minus The Herd

Today's word of the day, from the Page-A-Day calendar sitting on my desk, is dissonant.

dissonant: adj 1: marked by dissonance : discordant 2: incongruous 3: harmonically unresolved

Ion Dissonance is deathcore/mathcore/technical metal from Montreal. They have often been compared to The Dillinger Escape Plan, Beecher and Meshuggah. They are known for their technical riffs which are played one over another, groove-like drum patterns and a heavy atmosphere. Their lyrics are quite disturbing, dealing with death, murder, more death, and somewhat more acceptable topics such as struggling with faith. Lyrically, I don't stand behind this band's decisions, but hot dang can they riff. Stand-out tracks include The Surge and Shunned Redeemer.

Like businessmen you squeeze every resource to maximize profitability.
Helpless followers in what seems to be a game of hide and seek, but you too will crumble
beneath her wrath

She Killed Poetry - Shut Out The Silence

Dallas, TX's rising stars of musical brutality, these guys have created a truly crushing ten-song full length, which is their debut album on Imagine It Records. The group uses as many influences as they can, utilizing melodic metal, grinding blast beats, softer, sung harmonies, destructive breakdowns, precision double-bass, gutteral screams and howls. This disc is highly recommended for metalcore fans. Many hardcore fans will dig it, too. But metal purists and everyone else need not apply.

GoodBooks - Control

Goodbooks' desire to ride against the current makes their debut album all the the more unusual, and all the more exciting. A four-piece from Kent, England with an average age of around 21, the band is making headway. Control may manage to sound like a sketchbook for a band unsure of its identity, but I'd rather have Control's genre-shifting variety over the current crop of top 40, three-chord trick bands any day of the week.

There is a canyon, through which the river of music should flow. On one side of the canyon there is a great verge of cheese, which is the smelly kind, in a bad way. This must be avoided. On the other side is a great verge of indeterminate obscurity. Elements of this obscurity are wonderful, yet as with the cheese, for a good river you need both sides. So, the river flows with the colour of creation. And at the same time there is inquisitiveness, a journey through all sorts of weird and wonderful sounds. The river eventually flows to the sea, whence cometh enlightenment/the meaning of life/a glimpse of the ultimate form of good.

The Gaslight Anthem - Señor and the Queen EP

The Gaslight Anthem is one of those bands. Avoiding any one genre, the music they play is best described as heartfelt. Call it rock, punk, blues, folk, whatever, they do it well. They are easily and favorably compared with Against Me! and, at least for me, brought The Lawrence Arms to mind. Though 'Blue Jeans & White T-Shirts' reflects some definite John Mellencamp influences. Señor and the Queen brings four songs that don't sound similar, but somehow manage to convey a common theme. Raw, powerful, and brutally honest, the buzz building around this band is well deserved.

Secret And Whisper - Great White Whale

"We all have our secrets"
The much anticipated debut release from the Canadian band Secret and Whisper, Great White Whale is truly a piece of work. Nearly one year in the making, this release delivers the goods. If you're a fan of Saosin or Circa Survive, you will dig this band. The instrumentalists were all previously a part of Stutterfly. With the addition of Chris Furney, former vocalist of thebleedingalarm, the band decided a name change was in order.

Meet Secret and Whisper.

This is perhaps what Saosin would sound like today if Anthony Green were still the front man.

The Color Fred - Bend To Break

The Color Fred is the side project of former Taking Back Sunday guitarist and backup singer Fred Mascherino. With this release, it is clear that Macherino played a major role in the writing of Taking Back Sunday's material, as his side project shares many similarities. The biggest differences are a more acoustic sound, and the predominance of Fred's voice (whereas he provided backing vocals in TBS). The album focuses a fair bit on the turmoil caused by Mascherino's retraction from TBS. His lyrics are honest and personal. Here's an excerpt from track 5, 'Hate To See You Go':

Many are the hours I lie awake
Trash the room in vain
Try to waste the energy I never spend on you
Lying on this bed, never touch, not right now
If I'm over this by morning
That's a future I can't see

Well I'm gonna hate to see you go
But I've been impossible, I know
Yeah I'm gonna hate to see you go
But I know you're just waiting
The Color Fred will be supporting Angels & Airwaves on their 2008 tour. Other supporting acts on the tour include Meg & Dia, and Ace Enders.

Cary Brothers - Who You Are

Cary Brothers is an folk / indie rock singer-songwriter from Nashville, Tennessee. Who You Are is his first full-length release.
Brothers is known for the single "Blue Eyes", which was featured on the soundtrack to the 2004 film Garden State. Ironically enough, "Blue Eyes" is the weakest track on this release. The rest of the album is amazing. Check it out.

Hopes Die Last - Your Face Down Now

Hopes Die Last is a very young 5-piece screamo/hardcore outfit that just recently blew up thanks to their EP, Your Face Down Now. Its bands like this that give hope to the local bands aspiring to make it big. While their sound isn't quite polished to perfection, their songwriting is certainly impressive considering their ages.

Hopes Die Last is a melting pot of sounds. They're quite similar to From First To Last (Dear Diary), and maybe a little bit like old Underoath (the stuff before Define The Great Line that was more pop-influenced), and Emarosa (formerly Corsets Are Cages). But then they also use a lot of vocal harmonies; in this aspect they sound like Hidden In Plain View. They also have some in common with Atreyu, with the screamed verses and sung choruses.

I don't really like the singer's tone, but he hits all of his notes. Overall, I'm still trying to decide how I feel about the EP. It's certainly growing on me.

edIT - Certified Air Raid Material

Crisp. Glitch. Crunk.
Certified Air Raid Material seems to be edIT's unsolicited application for hip hop producer. While his previous release, Crying Over Pros and Cons for No Reason, was more relaxed and calming, this newest release is a different story. Certified Air Raid Material is chock-full of dance floor anthems, with some of the most complicated drum chops and sample cuts you've ever heard. Once edIT finished the beats, he invited some of the world's top underground rappers to join the party. The result: perhaps the most futuristic-sounding "hip-hop" album in history. This album features tracks such as 'Battling Go-Go Yubari in Downtown L.A.' and 'Crunk De Gaulle' that will make your head bob and your booty bounce.

Sea Wolf - Leaves in the River

Sea Wolf is the stage name of Alex Brown Church, a singer/songwriter from Los Angeles, California. He originally started the group "Irving" but a lot of the songs he wrote didn't mold to the group's style so he began performing as Sea Wolf with various musicians backing him up for performances in LA and demo-recording sessions in Seattle. "Leaves in the River" is Sea Wolf's first full-length album and it is packed full of uniquely melodic indie/folk tunes that won't disappoint. Although it is only February, this album would be a perfect addition to your Fall playlist (right alongside Death Cab for Cutie of course)! But for now, you'll just have to pretend that you're raking a big pile of leaves or going for a walk in the park while you give the album a listen...or a million!

Here's my obsession song, "You're a Wolf"...enjoy!
