The Weepies are an indie/pop/folk band fronted by singer-songwriters Deb Talan and Steve Tannen. Their music has been described as "subtly intoxicating folk-pop". Currently, Talan and Tannen are married and reside together in California.
The couple produces some amazing material. Their vocal harmonies are heavenly.
I'd recommend starting with their oldest album, Happiness, and listening in the order of release.

Anyone love extreme music? Parkway Drive is a metalcore band from Australia with insane breakdowns and plenty of machine gun drumming. Their two latest albums are excellent metalcore releases. The split EP and the re-issued EP are just for collectors.

Hot Chip - The Warning
Can't really even begin to tell you how much I love this album. It's not new but it's still sheer genius.
Some favorites include: "And I Was a Boy From School", "The Warning" & "So Glad to See You". Really though, they're all marvy.
I wanted to share the video for "And I Was a Boy From School" but apparently I'm not allowed so here's "So Glad to See You"
P.S. This is dedicated to new blogger Grant! Enjoy!

Neutral Milk Hotel - Hype City Soundtrack Demo
Hype City Soundtrack is the third and final named cassette of music which has thus far been discovered by Neutral Milk Hotel, which, at this point, was merely an outlet for Jeff Mangum's songwriting. Again, it was self-released by Mangum, for the enjoyment of himself and his friends, which was common among Elephant 6 luminaries of the time. Hype City Soundtrack is largely considered to be the most accessible of the demo tapes, being a more song-based effort, - rather than just some demos gathered in a tapemediafire

Titus Andronicus - The Airing of Grievances
This is Pitchfork's latest Best New Music pick and it's a little surprising. I mean, it's really good. Really really good. But the singer has kind of a Conor Oberst thing going on, and... I don't know, it's just no their typical taste.

From First To Last Discography (w/ new leak)
From First to Last is a screamo/punk/post-hardcore band. Their sound is full of energy, interesting guitar licks and heavy vocals.
The band released their first EP titled Aesthetic in 2003 with vocalist Philip Reardon. When they had plans to record a full-length, Reardon quit for personal reasons. The band wanted to move guitarist Matt Good to lead vocals. However, Good was reluctant to take on both lead vocal and guitar duties. The band found guitarist Sonny Moore through myspace, and flew him to Georgia for an audition. They were all set to record. However, when the other band members heard Moore singing Featuring Some of Your Favorite Words, they decided that he was much better suited for lead singer than guitarist. Dear Diary, My Teen Angst Has a Body Count was written in two weeks, recorded with Moore on lead vocals, and released on Epitaph records on June 29, 2004.
Heroine was released in 2006, also with vocalist Sonny Moore. During the Warped Tour of 2006, Moore needed throat surgery. Moore later dropped out of the band to pursue a solo career. Following Moore's departure, the band added permanent bassist Matt Manning and Matt Good moved to lead vocals/guitar. Very nice!

Fleming & John - Ugly Girl
Fleming and John are another musical husband/wife duo (like Mates of State) that met at college in Nashville and began making sweet sweet music together!
In the past they've opened for friend and fan Ben Folds, who called them the "Carpenters of the 1990s with Led Zeppelin's rhythm section," and they continue to perform and record with Folds from time to time.
This is track is from their album "The Way We Are" that was released in 1999 but it's still a good one to have in the music library!

Emily Wells - Beautiful Sleepyhead and the Laughing Yaks
Singer/songwriter Emily Wells became part of the Indianapolis music scene in 1998 at the age of 16, hoping to follow in the footsteps of her role model Ani DiFranco.
She's still rather underground but with the powerful combination of a unique voice & reflective lyrics, she'll at the very least become a staple of the indie music scene.
Here's what NPR said about her:
“Multi-instrumentalist Emily Wells says she's ‘most influenced by the songs and voices of Nina Simone and Bob Dylan.’ You can hear it in Emily's music. She's a singer-songwriter with unconventional and often chilling vocals.”
- NPR, June 2oo7
I ordered this album from her website and it took a little longer than expected. To my surprise Emily included a personal apology note for the delay and a copy of some tracks from an upcoming release. Talk about hospitality!
My personal favorites are "Mt. Washington" and "Supermarket". They're both hauntingly beautiful.

Your Best Friend - Self-Titled
Your Best Friend are an extremely talented and extremely dedicated foursome from Saginaw, Michigan. They've been around, in one form or another, for four years. After member departures, member returns, more departures, and finally new members, Your Best Friend has a solid line up that cranks out heartfelt jam after heartfelt jam. The choruses are catchy, the melodies are on point, and the lyrics are meaningful, but this band is at their best when they are simply jamming.

Sage Francis - A Healthy Distrust
somehow in all the sage francis posts this album was left out. how? this is probably his strongest release. killer tracks from danger mouse and reanimator and the lyrical genius of sage are found throughout. 'slow down ghandi' is a great political angst track in the vein of well, hip hop, before it went commercial.

Flogging Molly - Float
i'll argue that flogging molly are one of the greatest bands of all time. on their latest release they've written more songs that are 'flogging molly' songs and less irish songs with a punk flavoring. though the title track takes a while to hit it's groove, the following song 'you won't make a fool out of me' has the familiar upbeat molly sound.

Dusty Rhodes and the River Band - First You Live
The Beatles meets every classic rock band ever, with more hooks than your grandpa's tackle box. At least one song will get stuck in your head (mine was 'dear honey', if for no other reason than i'm partial to songs about drinking). Most of the band members play at least two instruments giving an incredibly full sound. yessir.

Sunset Rubdown - Random Spirit Lover
I don't want to say a lot because the music kind of speaks for itself but Sunset Rubdown was originally started as the solo project of Wolf Parade's Spencer Krug. His baby is now all grown up and full of energy on "Random Spirit Lover". Check it out!
"The Mending of the Gown"
Was it the mending of the gown, or the running,
and the running and the running it around?
She said my name and my spirit are both corrupt
and if you hold me close, you gotta hold me up.
It was the tender mending of this slender gown that brought me bending to the ground.
Now you’ll wear any old thing, oh you’ll wear any old thing.
So she wrapped herself in swallowing up the fever to the air of the broken wind
It’s an actor thing, she’s just pretending. It’s an actor thing, she’s just pretending.
P.S. The beginning of this song is pretty amazing so all you guitar players can learn how to play it by watching this video by this guy:

Cloud Cult - Feel Good Ghosts
Cloud Cult, a talented, experimental indie band hails from Minneapolis,MN and started in the mid-nineties as Craig Minowa recruited artists to contribute to his solo recordings. This early work earned Cloud Cult several offers from record labels, but all were rejected in favor of self-publishing.
In 1997, lead singer Craig Minowa created Earthology Records to release his band's recordings. His nonprofit label uses recycled materials and donates all their profits to environmental charities. The band also tours in a biodiesel van.(See, it's cool to be green!)
This is Cloud Cult's most recently released album entitled "Feel Good Ghosts" (Tea-Partying Through Tornadoes) on April 8, and this might be their last. The good news is that they're not only playing First Avenue on Saturday, April 26th, but they will also be performing at Rock the Garden with the likes of Andrew Bird, The New Pornographers and Bon Iver in June which I will most definitely be attending!
Here's more info on the AMAZING "Rock the Garden" show this June:

OZMA Discography
OZMA - Rock and Roll Part Three (2000)
OZMA will surely please any Weezer fan with their first studio release. They share the same energetic powerpop, but where OZMA excels is their witty and often ironic lyrics. Prepare for a tribute to Natalie Portman, the contradictory lyrics of "Ups and Downs," Nintendo refrences (Mario and Luigi), and plenty of wordplay. Theres a great Back to the Future reference in "In Search of 1988:" "Warp me back at 88" (the speed required for time travel, duh).
Favorite Line: "An apple pie, the number pi, I studied you in math class. I did all my work, but never got your digits!"
Favorite Song: "In Search of 1988"
mediafire
OZMA - The Doubble Donkey Disc (2001)
Early in 2001, the band also self-released The Doubble Donkey Disc (later reissued on Kung Fu Records). With this release, Ozma experimented with the traditional Russian balalaika and the flute to create a sound they called "Russian coldfusion". The disc was split into two imaginary "concept EPs": the first five songs (including the Russian folk song "Korobeiniki", more famously the Tetris theme) revolved around Russian themes, while the second half created a more "dance party" atmosphere.Expanding on the Nintendo theme, OZMA begins to experiment with their rendition of the Tetris theme song, and it becomes a common thread in a lot of their songs. They will continue to use the style of connecting songs with common musical themes and melodies. Also, check out references to Link from Zelda, and playing with Legos.
Favorite Line: Eh, no favorite. I'm not nearly as familiar with this album as the others, but it's still very good.
Favorite Song: Korobeiniki [Traditional Russian Folk Song] (aka: the Tetris theme song)
mediafire
OZMA - Spending Time on the Borderline (2003)
OZMA's third studio album is powerpop like it ain't no thang. Notice more of OZMA's use of Nintendo and Back to the Future references (Both in "Game Over": "where I go I don't need roads!" and also a reference to Huey Lewis and the News' "Power of Love" in "Come Home Andrea:" "Girl make a one man cry, make another man sing")
Favorite Line: From "Come Home Andrea": "Tonight I'll be a whore for you, and you can dance for me. No money exchanged if we ask the same fee"
Favorite Song: "Wake Up" It's the song that hooked me.
So witty OZMA!
